The renovation and extension of Casa da Avó – a house located in a beautiful village in the mountainous interior of Portugal – will transform the functionality of the space while honouring the family’s happy memories.
The property benefits from breath-taking views over the surrounding landscape. Over time, the interior has grown organically, typical of this region and characterised by diverse floor to ceiling heights, small rooms and many steps. Traditional stone walls and floors, a timber structure and rough plaster finishes accentuate the character of the two-storey building.
The owner, a graphic designer with a keen eye for detail, inherited the property from her grandmother. Our brief is to keep the spirit of the house while creating a contemporary space to suit modern life. Using an honest approach, the project includes the full renovation of the internal layouts, re-using materials where possible, a new volume on the top floor to accommodate a new master bedroom and bathroom, extra floor to ceiling height, plus the redesign of the external terrace and connection to the garden.
