“I love it so much! I like to play in the house. I like the wood and the colour of the roof. I like the stairs and the upstairs”
Lilly, age 3
After so many years designing large scale projects, it was really exciting to work on such a fun and free-minded project for a little one. The aim was to stimulate imaginative play in a modern setting for boys and girls.
The Toy House features a garage, entrance hall, downstairs bathroom, open plan living room connected to a terrace and two bedrooms. The stereotypical shape of the house is enriched by the contrasting forms of the pitched roof and several openings, giving lots of options for access. With flat sides and a slim depth, it can be easily positioned on the floor or table, or tucked away on a shelf and provides plenty of storage for the multiple little items that fill it with joy.
Birch ply provided the perfect material for this design, allowing the use of thin boards without compromising its robustness. The low cost materials are slotted and glued together with the natural look inviting the owner to personalise the surfaces and decorate them as she or he wishes. I hope to see lots of colour, beautiful drawings and new features glued to the surfaces, adding interest and making a real home for much-loved toys.
I love seeing the dolls, animals and robots happily co-habiting. Left to their own imagination, children can show us so much about living together in perfect harmony.
